With a focus on naturalness, individuality, and stimulation (SIN) as the key design principles, the study aimed to identify the impact of physical classroom features on the academic progress of 3766 pupils

  • An Environment-behaviour factors model was strongly validated, with 10 environmental factors of the classroom and 5 non-environmental factors analyzed.
  • The naturalness design principle accounted for around 50% of the impact on learning, with individuality and stimulation accounting for roughly a quarter each.
  • Seven key design parameters were identified to explain 16% of the variation in pupils' academic progress achieved. These parameters include Light, Temperature, Air Quality, Ownership, Flexibility, Complexity, and Colour.

Implications

The muted impact of the whole-building level of analysis provides support for the importance of "inside-out design." This study not only provides new findings for schools' research but also suggests that the scale of the impact of building design on human performance and wellbeing, in general, can be isolated and is non-trivial. Therefore, it is argued that capitalizing on this promising progress and further developing these concepts and techniques makes sense.
